Research in Physics at the University of Michigan

For more than a century, the University of Michigan has been home to a leading institution specializing in physics research and education. The U-M Physics Department has a vast array of research groups, centers, and programs. There are five main Research Groups which are featured below.

The research experience ranges from theoretical and experimental research into the most fundamental questions of physics, to systematic investigations of the applications of physics principles and discoveries in a variety of fields. Theoretical and experimental faculty maintain close ties--a longstanding tradition at Michigan.
