Silicon charged particle detectors enable all present colliding beam experiments. Hybrid pixels were the newest addition to this instrument category 10 years ago, are expanding in their usage today, and will continue to expand in the future. But the technology choices for pixel devices are ever changing and there is room for new development. Perhaps more than any other type of scientific instrumentation, pixel detectors depend heavily on commercial microelectronic technology. I will describe how particle physics pixel detectors work and how they relate to commercial microelectronics. I will give examples of future directions being investigated.
