The Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics (MIRA) was founded by the Departments of Astronomy, Physics and Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP) to help the University of Michigan play a greater role in pushing the frontiers of astrophysics.

It was approved by the University Board of Regents in 2013, and launched in 2014.
