    Ms. Carney-Coston's career combines education and media. She has taught at the middle school and college level, and worked as an award-winning media producer in television programming and Web content for PBS affiliates, National Geographic, The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and a variety of other organizations.  Her productions include: 

    • A five-part video series about reading in conjunction with the International Reading Association, which won a CINE Golden Eagle award.  
    • A Web-based National Geographic feature on the Underground Railroad which received a Parents' Choice award and was praised by The Detroit News as "one of the most sophisticated yet kid-friendly sites about the Underground Railroad."
    • Public affairs programming, ranging from political debates with members of Congress to discussions about the future of theater with Edward Albee.  

    Ms. Carney-Coston is also an active community volunteer.  She was appointed by the Arlington County, VA School Board to serve on the Advisory Council for instruction, and she was a part of a team that helped create a science focus school and numerous outreach programs. She is also a member of a civic group that provides scholarship support for women returning to post-secondary education.
