Transitions display garden at Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

At the east entrance to our trail system, Transitions deftly takes the visitor from the modernist building and formal garden areas to the floodplain woods and the trailhead pavilion. The sloped, curving path meanders past large boulders and a naturalistic screen of red maple (Acer rubrum), evergreens (Thuja cultivars) and native shrubs. Suddenly the view opens to show the constructed wetland which naturally filters the run-off from our building and parking lot, and the boardwalk to the trailhead. There is a large stone bench in a fine place to watch the wildlife.

Much of the wildlife is best seen in summer, especially early or late in the day. Transitions and the constructed wetland are open year round, except when the trails are closed due to flood water or ice.

Transitions is at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens site.

Transitions was designed by Mark Korzon and is one of the 'Gardenscape' installations generously funded by the Ford Motor Company. The Stanley Smith Horticulture Trust donated labeling. Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum needs private support and provides donors with many giving opportunities and recognition.
