Deconstructed Landscape integrates environmental art and a challenging location to make an attractive deer- and drought-resistant garden using ornamental grasses. Inspired by environmental sculptors like Christo and Carl Andre, the bold wall also deconstructs by moving from man-made to natural stone. In parallel with this deconstruction, the grasses are arrayed to present intimate and dramatic compositions.
The grasses and physical structures give this garden year-round interest. The peak season for the grasses is late summer until the following spring. It is especially beautiful in the winter with a fresh cap of snow on the seed heads.
Visitors seem either to love this garden or to hate it - it all depends if they appreciate the artistic concept of entropy/deconstruction that is core to the presentation.
The Deconstructed Landscape is at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens site.
The Deconstructed Landscape was created by John Hollowell and funded by the Ford Motor Company. The Stanley Smith Horticulture Trust donated labeling. Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum needs private support and provides donors with many giving opportunities and recognition.
