Each summer University student interns are an integral part of the work we do at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. All areas of operations employ paid interns to assist with the busy summer season at our sites.
Interns work directly with staff, in project teams, or individually. Their work assignments make a significant contribution to the overall operations of MBGNA. During the summer, each intern participates in a special project, which they oversee from beginning to end and showcase with a special presentation at the end of the summer to Arb and Gardens staff. Lunchtime learning sessions take place throughout the summer and are designed to provide interns with the bigger picture of our operations. Work done by summer interns has a lasting effect at our sites and can be seen in some of our garden designs, construction projects, and interpretative signage. Through their contributions interns gain valuable professional experience regardless of their field of study.
Generally we announce our internship opportunities in mid-January, and usually hiring is completed by the end of March. The internships run from May through mid-August. Please check back at this site for more the current internship listings.

During the academic most of our departments employ work-study students. As with our intern program, work-study students interact directly with staff and become part of the work team. Assignments vary and all are valuable hands-on experiences for students. Work-study positions are posted to the student employment site just before and at the beginning of fall and winter term.
