This edition of tech tips concentrates on configuring default settings in order to minimize the changes you’ll need to make each time you log in. These tips include some of the most frequently requested items when setting up computers for our users.
I. Setting your default printer
When a new printer is installed on your computer it becomes the default unless otherwise configured.
For Windows users:
1. Click Start – Devices and Printers
2. Right-click over the printer you would like to set as the default printer.
3. Click on "Set As Default Printer"
NOTE: When the default printer is set, a small check mark is placed by the printer you've selected.
For Mac users:
1. Click Apple Icon – System Preferences
2. Click Print & Fax
Right-click over the printer you would like to set as the default printer.
NOTE: When using a track pad just press the command key while clicking the lower right corner of your track pad.
3. Click on "Set default printer"
The printer you selected is now set as the default printer.
II. Setting the Google Chrome startup page to your M+Google Mail login
**During the Google roll-out we recommended that our users think of Google Chrome as their mail client. To help aid this recommendation you should*consider setting Google Chrome to startup at the M+Google mail login every time you open this browser.* *
1. Click the "Customize and control Google Chrome icon"on the browser toolbar.
2. Scroll down to and click on Settings. In the "On startup” section, choose the options "Open a specific page or set of pages"
3. Click Set pages and enter the web address of the page you want to see.
4. In the “Add a new Page” field type email.umich.edu
III. Setting your default mail program **
**We recommend using Google Chrome as the default mail handler for your computer.
1. When you first log in to M+Google Mail, you’ll see a double-diamond icon in your address bar:
2. Clicking this icon opens a menu:
3. Choose Use University of Michigan Mail and then click Done. Chrome will now open a new compose window whenever you click on an email link.
IV. Start programs automatically each time your computer starts
If you always open the same programs after starting your computer, such as a web browser or word processing program, you might find it convenient to have these programs start automatically when your computer powers on.
Programs or shortcuts placed in the Startup folder will run whenever Windows starts.
1. Click the Start button, click All Programs, right-click the Startupfolder, and then click Open.
2. Open the location that contains the item to which you want to create a shortcut.
3. Right-click the item, and then click Create Shortcut. The new shortcut appears in the same location as the original item.
4. Drag the shortcut into the Startup folder.
The next time you start Windows, the program will run automatically. Note: You can also make an individual file, such as a word-processing document, open automatically by dragging a shortcut of the file into the Startup folder. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu, then:
1. Click Accounts (in the System row of the System Preferences window).
2. Click the Login Items tab.
3. Click the Add (+) button.
4. Scroll down and click Applications
5. Select the application of your choice.
V. Setting the default program for a specific file type
A default program is the program that your computer uses when you open a particular type of file.
Open Default Programs
1. Right click on the file you want to open.
2. Scroll down to “Open with” and if the program is not in the list then click on “Choose default program” and navigate to the program you want Windows to open by default.

1. Control click (right click) on any file and choose “Get Info.”
2. In the “Get Info window” select which application you would like to be the default for opening this file type.
3. Choose “Other” from the drop down menu if you need to see the list of applications on your computer.
4. Once you’ve chosen your default application, choose “Change All” and this application will open for this file type.
