Professor William Baxter participated in conferences on Chinese paleography in Singapore and Erlangen, Germany. He later travelled to China for three weeks where he spoke at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, the Center for Research on Chinese Excavated Classics and Paleography at Fudan University, Rénmín University

He spent three weeks in China, delivering a series of six lectures on the linguistic reconstruction of Old Chinese (basically, the language of the earliest Chinese texts) at Rénmín University in Beijing; while in Beijing, he also gave lectures at Tsinghua University and the Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and was invited to the Center for Chinese Linguistics at Peking University for a discussion of the book he recently published, with Laurent Sagart as co-author (Old Chinese: a new reconstruction). He then went to Shanghai to give a lecture at Fudan University.
