The most important requirements LHSP has are to (1) learn; (2) to take risks with your writing and artwork; and (3) have fun while you're doing it. You can't learn much of anything and can't have any real fun if you're sitting in your dorm room eating microwave popcorn, pondering whether you should do whites or colors on your next laundry trip, so participation is expected. We require students to participate in selected Welcome Week activities, community meetings, and in clubs and projects. Of course, this isn't to say that we're discouraging from doing your laundry; we encourage that as well.
Course Requirements:
You must take AT LEAST one LHSP course each term.
-
One LHSP 125 (Introduction to College Writing) course, offered in fall term. This also fulfills the introductory writing requirement for LSA. A regular ENG 125 class will not substitute for this requirement. If you are an Honors or Engineering student, or if you took LHSP 125 over the summer, please contact LHSP staff during registration: You will still need to take an LHSP course in the fall term. We will be offering one section of LHSP 140 and one section of LHSP 230 during fall term. You can find descriptions of these courses in our Course Guide.
- At least one other LHSP course in winter term. These courses include LHSP 140 (Studio Art), LHSP 130 (Writing and the Arts I), LHSP 228 (What Is Writing?), and LHSP 230 (Writing and Arts II). Descriptions of these courses will be available prior to your registration for winter term.
Co-curricular requirements:
-
You will be required to attend several all-LHSP mandatory events throughout the year, including several events during WELCOME WEEK, as well as an end-of-year ARTS AND LITERARY FESTIVAL. We will inform you of dates, times, and descriptions of these events over the summer.
- You will also need to participate in co-curricular events and activities, such as guest author readings, art and writing workshops, and clubs and projects (such as the art and literary journal, book club, photography club, or creative writing workshops). Your participation in events and clubs is mandatory. You must attend at least ONE co-curricular program a month—but please note that we encourage you to participate more than that. These events will be linked to your LHSP courses, and lack of participation will affect your grade.
Please note if you are interested in joining another organization, such as a sorority or fraternity:
Students who become involved in other organizations, particularly those that require a significant time commitment during the first semester, may have difficulty balancing the needs of two communities. Over the years, we've found that students who choose to defer fraternity or sorority rush until their second year have better experiences in both their new organization and the LHSP program. Keep in mind: Failure to meet program requirements will result in a loss of membership in the program as well as a loss of residence in Alice Lloyd Hall. Only you know what you can handle, but adjusting to college can take some time, so make your choices wisely.
