Diversity in Higher Education

What does it mean to be a diverse campus? How does structural racism operate in higher education? What connections are there between the fight to end racist policing and to fight to build a more just educational system? What can we do to build a university that is accessible to and supportive of all people?

Come hear scholar-activists Austin McCoy and Jennifer Alzate discuss these questions and more. Both Austin and Jen were heavily involved in last year’s Speak Out and have continued to do anti-racist organizing on the U of M campus. They will talk about some of the ways that structural racism operates in higher education, looking in particular at why policies presumed to be “race-blind” have a systematic deleterious impact on people and communities of color.

Jen and Austin will also talk about strategies for engaging the University and improving diversity on campus and ideas for how we can tackle these issues here in Ann Arbor.

“Fighting Racism in the Academy: Diversity and Structural Racism in Higher Education” is the first in a series of talks about structural racism and local anti-racist organizing sponsored by the group AA2 to Ferguson.
