Saturday, September 21, 2013

Traverwood Branch, Ann Arbor District Library 3333 Traverwood Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48105

New Participatory Practices

Museums have played a role in defining and perpetuating racial stereotypes. New best practices include curatorial collaboration with communities, the creation of museums by and for specific cultural groups, and audience research to inform the development of new programs and exhibits. The program will include short presentations and large and small-group discussions about what makes museums welcoming and inclusive - or not.

Panelists include Professor Ray Silverman, immediate past director of U-M's Museum Studies Program; Joyce Hunter, President of the African-American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County; Anan Ameri, Founding Director of the Arab American National Museum; Maria Cotera, Founding Partner of Museo del Norte and U-M Associate Professor of American Culture and Women's Studies, and Kenneth Morris, Evaluator, and Swarupa Anila, Director of Interpretive Engagement, Learning, and Interpretation, Detroit Institute of Arts. Danny Brown, SEED and Leadership Coordinator at the Neutral Zone, will facilitate.
