Latina/o Studies Colloquium: Immigrant Rights in Michigan: A Conversation with Ryan Bates (Immigrants Rights & Reform), Hannah Noel (PhD candidate, American Culture) and representatives from Immigrant Rights on Campus (Christina Marie Baker and Mary Birkett) (list in formation). Ryan Bates is currently the Director of the Alliance for Immigrants Rights & Reform ? Michigan (http://www.michiganimmigrationreform.org/). A native of Metro-Detroit, he is a graduate of the University of Michigan Residential College and has worked in politics and community organizing throughout the state. He has worked as a community organizer from the east side of Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, as a canvass manager working to stop urban sprawl and raise the minimum wage, and as a campaign manager of five successful competitive bids for state house. In 2009, he led the Reform Immigration FOR America Campaign in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. He became the founding director of the Alliance for Immigrants Rights in 2010. Refreshments will be served.
