Lunch with Honors | Free Expression and Free Speech on Campus and Online

Marc Rotenberg
Thursday, October 13, 2016
12:00-1:00 PM
1330 Mason Hall Map
The right to free speech is enshrined in our Constitution; free expression is a cherished value in our society and in the open culture of the Internet. But the exercise of free speech can cause harm to others and ironically might inhibit the free expression of others. When does free expression cross the line and become hate speech or a threat to safety? How should we as individuals, groups, or society as a whole deal with these complicated issues? Come to learn about and discuss these other important questions with an important expert in the issues of privacy, free expression, civil protections, and national security.
Marc Rotenberg, Professor of Law at Georgetown University, is also President and Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) in Washington, D.C. He has testified before Congress, served on national and international panels, written for the academic and popular press, and appeared on all major news media on emerging privacy and civil liberties. Professor Rotenberg is coming to UM to deliver the 26th annual Davis, Markert, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom later in the afternoon: this is your chance to meet and talk with him in a smaller setting. His lecture is at 4pm in Rackham Auditorium.
