Visualizing the Social--Keynote Lecture

2017 History of Art Fall Symposium
Friday, September 22, 2017
5:00-7:00 PM
Helmut Stern Auditorium Museum of Art Map
This conference explores the powerful engagement with the social in visual art and media from the aftermath of the Revolutions of 1848 and the Paris Commune of 1871 to the reshaping of the political landscape by the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, a period when class conflicts endemic to developed capitalism emerged as central concerns. The visualizing of this social landscape took a variety of forms, ranging from social realism to avant-garde experimentation, and from painting and photography to imagery in the printed media. Featured talks include Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby on Creole Degas, André Dombrowski on Impressionism and industrial time and Christina Kaier on Soviet socialist realism.
