Butterflies and Moths
Grades 2-5
With 180,000 species worldwide, moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) are amazingly diverse! Learn butterfly anatomy, life histories and how to attract butterflies to your school or backyard. Using mounted insects, live organisms and a bit of dress-up, students will go beyond butterfly basics, to learn about the economic, cultural and ecological importance of Lepidoptera.

Rocks and Minerals

Become a geologist as we explore the fascinating world of rocks and minerals. Learn how scientists use color, heft, hardness and other properties to identify minerals. Discover the surprising uses of minerals around your home. Find out which rocks and minerals are mined here in Michigan and how some animals use minerals to survive!

Michigan's Ecosystems
Grades 3-5
Michigan is home to diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and beaches. This program compares and contrasts four of Michigan's natural communities. We start by looking at non-living components such as soil type, climate and moisture levels. Indicator plants and animals are introduced highlighting their ecological role, or niche. Finally, we find out how Michiganders depend upon these landscapes and derive economic benefit from them.

Magnificent Mammals
Grades 6-12
Join us for a crash course in Mammalogy! Start with a presentation that introduces mammalian characteristics and highlights the great diversity of mammals and their successful form. Then migrate to the Museum of Zoology, for an exclusive tour of the Mammal Collections. Bats, bears, brockets and binturongs are just a few of the 150,000 specimens housed here.
