Douglas Northrop, Professor of History and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan, considered the history of seismic spaces in the Tsarist and Soviet empires of Central Asia in his September 11 lecture for the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. His talk, "Earthquakes on the Edge: Border Spaces and Empire Making Along the Eurasian Frontier," continued the Institute's 2013-15 theme, "Materials of History." 

On September 12, University of Michigan professors Arun Agrawal (Natural Resources) and Richard P. Tucker (Natural Resources), along with graduate students Emily Merchant (History) and Davide Orsini (Anthropology and History), presented the workshop, "History in the Anthropocene: The Environment, Natural Sciences, and Planetary Narratives." Assistant Professor Perrin Selcer (History) chaired.
