About
Professor Rotella specializes in the economic history of the U.S. and in labor and demographic economics. Much of her research has examined the role of women in the U.S. economy and the history of savings and debt. Among the institutions she studies are savings banks, mortgage lending, and pawnbroking. Her research in demographic economics examines the relationship between municipal expenditures on sanitation and mortality from water-borne diseases. Professor Rotella came to the University of Michigan after a long career at Indiana University. She has spent time as a visiting professor at Uppsala Univeristy and at l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.
