PhD Application Process

The PhD program offers admission for the fall term only. Your application must be submitted with the on‐line application process by midnight on December 15. There is no separate application form for financial aid. Access to the on‐line application is at

All applicants must submit the following material: 

A. Application Form (including statement of purpose, personal statement, and CV) 
B. Application Fee
C. Transcript of all post‐secondary institutions attended. Include a scanned image of your
transcript(s) with the on‐line application. A scanned copy of an official student copy, provided to you by the Registrar’s Office, is acceptable. Rackham Graduate School also requires applicants to submit a transcript. Check their web site at for further details.
D. Three letters of recommendation. If you are currently attending a graduate program, two of those three letters must be submitted from faculty in that graduate program.
E. Valid, official score reports of GRE and TOEFL (if applicable)

Do NOT submit the following material: 

A. Unofficial transcript(s) printed from your institution’s student portal (a screen print of a
B. List of textbooks from your coursework
C. List of economics, mathematics, and statistics courses and grades
D. Writing sample
E. Paper copy of GRE and/or TOEFL score reports

The application evaluation process for the doctoral program in economics is done on‐line. Supplementary materials submitted as a hard‐copy will slow the review of your application and is strongly discouraged.
