The Teaching of Writing

This course provides an introduction to writing instruction across multiple subjects. Disciplines have different expectations as to what constitutes good academic writing, but all writing shares four key concepts:  audience, purpose, tone, and argument. Students this course learn about these important rhetorical concepts can help teachers work effectively with students writing in many disciplines.

Topics covered by the course include assignments, assessment, writing and difference, the writing process, and Common Core State Standards (CCSS). In response to the weekly readings, students create assignments, memos, in-class exercises, handouts, and other documents that are essential genres in a teacher’s life.
