Workshops and Presentations for Faculty and GSIs
The Sweetland Center for Writing seeks to support and improve the teaching of writing at the University of Michigan. Sweetland Center for Writing workshops introduce faculty across the University to the challenges of teaching writing in courses that both instruct students in particular fields of study and help students develop the sophisticated writing skills they will need throughout their undergraduate careers. With this in mind, we will gladly come to your department or hold workshops at Sweetland to meet with faculty and GSIs on a variety of topics, such as:
- responding effectively to and evaluating student writing, both in drafts and in final versions;
- working with multilingual students;
- designing and sequencing writing and research assignments;
- reviewing grammar, mechanics, and style issues;
- integrating technology into the classroom;
- designing and evaluating online course projects; and
- citing sources and preventing plagiarism.
Sweetland offers presentations and workshops in the classroom that deal with common and more specialized issues in writing. We tailor all workshops to meet specific classroom needs.
Our brief informational classroom visits introduce your students to Sweetland writing support services. Please contact Sweetland at firstname.lastname@example.org or 764-0429 to discuss scheduling a workshop tailored to your or your department's need.
Writing Support Services We Provide to Students
Your students will find our Writing Workshop in 1310 North Quad, and our Peer Writing Center is in G219 Angell Hall, with satellite locations in the Undergraduate Library, Alice Lloyd Hall and the Dudersadt Center (more info on our Writing Support page). Students can also receive assistance using our OWL system to connect to a peer writing consultant remotely via the web (more info on our OWL page). Undergraduate international and multilingual writers can access resources on our International Student Support page.
As you encourage your students to use our services this term, we ask you not to require their attendance or offer credit for it. We find that students who come to us of their own accord are more motivated to benefit from the session, and leave with a more productive attitude toward their writing and our services. It is our policy not to provide "proof" of attendance. If you have any questions about this policy, feel free to contact Sweetland's Associate Director, Naomi Silver (email@example.com).
Handouts to Share with Your Students
We have three flyers with information about Sweetland resources tailored to undergraduate students, graduate students, and international undergraduate students. These one-sided flyers are great for bulletin boards, sharing on your Canvas sites, and handing out.
We also have two bookmarks: one for undergraduates and one for graduate students with the same condensed information as the flyers and that also include our hours and locations of our writing centers for the current term.
Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you'd like us to send you a packet of bookmarks and/or copies of our flyers. Please indicate how many you need in your email.
