Study Abroad and Internships

Study Abroad

The Center for Global and Intercultural Study has opportunities for U-M students to spend a semester or summer abroad in a Slavic country.  Remember to check with your Slavic major or minor advisor before you leave if you plan to have any study abroad credits count toward your Slavic degree.

Other Study Abroad Resources

There are many study abroad programs available that are not sponsored by U-M. These programs may or may not count for credit or towards distribution or major requirements. Please consult with the LSA Academic Advising Center and your Slavic department advisor for advice on transfer credits before enrolling in non-U-M programs.

The CREES website has a list of programs at other US colleges and universities, as well as a list of other program providers.

Internships

Opportunity Hub

U-M's Opportunity Hub has many resources to help you find an internship.

Ukrainian Internships

The Slavic department has a relationship with a few organizations in Metro Detroit and in Ukraine for students interested in internships focused on Ukraine. Please contact Svitlana Rogovyk, srogovyk@umich.edu, for more details.

Other Internship Resources

The following opportunities are not necessarily endorsed by the Slavic department; they are included here for your reference.

Internships with the Kennan Institute

The Kennan Institute offers paid research internships for undergraduate, graduate, and prospective graduate students. Each intern works with a scholar in residence at the Institute over a period of three to nine months. Applicants should have a good command of the Russian or Ukrainian language and ability to conduct independent research. This internship offers a flexible schedule of 15 hours per week and a metro subsidy for conducting off-site research.

RUSLAN Alternative Spring Break

We travel to St. Petersburg and Vytegra, Russia over spring break, where students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in cultural programs, extensive service-learning and hands-on student research projects in provincial Russia. Read the student blog from the Winter 2013 trip here. Check back for updates on future trips.
