Study Abroad & Transfer Credit

SAC student Caroline Schaper went abroad to Grenoble, France in the summer of 2013. She lived with a French family in the alps and studied at Stendhal University where she took classes in French language, civilization and literature. She's double-majoring in French and SAC, so all of her credits went to French, but she still participated in a lot of film-related activities, like festivals and museums. She was able to travel around the south of France and visited Switzerland and Monaco.

Chelsea Golub studied abroad in London, UK, during the second semester of her junior year on IES Study London Program.  She had the most amazing time immersing herself into the British culture and lifestyle.  There, she took a combination of Screen Arts & Cultures classes as well as International Studies and British Classes.  She lived in the trendy Spitalfields area of London and took classes in Holborn in the center of London.  She made life-long friends and connections she will never forget.  Not only was she able to travel around the UK, but also visited 10 other countries.

SAC '14 graduate Mary Bridget Welch studied abroad during her junior year, winter semester in London, UK at Queen Mary University of London in the East End.  She took a few film studies classes, one about Alfred Hitchcock who was actually from the East End, one about Japanese cinema, and another focusing on audience and reception studies.  She traveled to nine different countries and all over the UK. 

Overall, it was a truly amazing and rewarding experience!

Credit in the SAC major is more likely to be granted as SAC elective credit rather than core courses.  A student is allowed a TOTAL of 9 transfer credits in the SAC major.

Screen Arts Students Planning to Study Abroad

Prior to going abroad, you must meet with the SAC Associate Chair for preliminary approval of how proposed courses may count in the major or minor.  Please provide course descriptions, syllabi, or other available material.  You should also contact an advisor in LS&A to be sure courses will transfer into the College.  NOTE: If the course(s) are taken through the Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS), they are considered University of Michigan courses and do not need assessment by an LSA transfer advisor. 

SAVE all of your materials – syllabi, reading lists, papers, exams, projects, etc. – from your course(s) taken while abroad.  When you return to UM, you will provide these course materials to the SAC Associate Chair for final transfer credit assessment in the SAC major or Global Media Studies minor.  Please schedule an advising appointment with the Associate Chair for a date and time at least one week following receipt of your materials.

Transferring Credit into LSA

If you wish to transfer credit from courses taken at another institution, transfer advisors in LS&A first make determination if credit will transfer into the College, and how many credits will be received.  You must meet with an advisor in LS&A for this determination.

Transferring Credit into SAC

The determination of transfer credit is based on assessment that the course work was equal to courses in the Screen Arts & Cultures in both nature and amount of material covered and comparative rigor of the experience.  In order to receive transfer credit, students must have comparable experience that prepares them to move to the more advanced courses in SAC sequences. 

After your courses have been assessed by an LSA transfer advisor, to determine HOW your courses taken at other institutions will count in the Screen Arts & Cultures major or Global Media Studies minor, you must meet with SAC Associate Chair. Prior to your meeting, you must provide course syllabi and work completed (including written papers, exams, or projects such as screenplays or video/film production work).  Please schedule an advising appointment with the SAC Associate Chair for a date and time at least one week following receipt of your materials.
