“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” -Nelson Mandela

With nearly one billion speakers of the Romance languages worldwide, learners of the Romance languages are able to connect with millions of people from a multitude of countries and cultural backgrounds. We’re thrilled that you are considering foreign language education with the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures! Not only will we help you develop a broad fluency in the Romance languages, but you will also gain a deeper understanding of their diverse cultural and historical contexts. Our learning goals include acquiring both a wide vocabulary and control of grammatical structures, as well as developing greater specialization in cross-cultural analysis and in key themes relevant to specific disciplines.

Our department offers courses in some of the most widely-spoken Romance languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Catalan.

The RLL department is here to offer support and provide any information you may need, whether you’re a major, minor, or simply enjoy learning more about the topics we offer. We hope to see you soon!
