Spanish Language Internship Program
The Spanish Language Internship Program, RCLANG 306.001, is an engaged learning course that is currently offered Fall and Winter semesters. This unique course is open to all undergraduate students and links Spanish-speaking students with community-based organizations to provide unique service learning opportunities in the Latino community. Through volunteering activities and class discussions, you will gain insight into the cultural, political, and socioeconomic issues affecting this group, with opportunities to refine your Spanish.
Community Partner List
Corner Health Clinic: Student will assist clients with translation of forms, scheduling appointments with Spanish speaking clients, and translating for patients/ staff as needed.
ESL classes at FUMC: Students volunteering at this site assist instructor with ESL classes on Monday’s or Wednesday from 7 – 9 pm. Students need to be comfortable with written and spoken Spanish.
Casa Latina: Students will greet clients and provide them with information and resources as needed. Students will also assist Director with website updates and administrative duties. Strong Spanish speaking skills and writing skills are necessary. .
En Nuestra Lengua Program:
Student would assist with the Saturday morning Spanish program for heritage language speakers of Spanish. Duties range from classroom support to administrative support, depending on Spanish proficiency. Program operates completely in Spanish.
Ann Arbor Preschool & Family Center:
Student will assist instructor and work specifically with Spanish speaking children in the pre-school classroom. Student will also work directly with administrative staff, assist with all communication, as well as assigned administrative duties.
Ann Arbor Public Schools, Kindergarten through 12th grade:
Students can select the grade level they would like to work with and will assist ESL/classroom instructors and Spanish speaking students with individualized, translation from English into Spanish, during core class instruction times.
Community Action Network, CAN: Student will assist with tutoring Spanish speaking students and afterschool tutoring and programing at the community center.
Justice for Our Neighbors: This organization has monthly meetings with clients in need of free legal aide, in South West Detroit. Intern will work on weekly projects with staff attorney, make phone calls, and help with administrative duties as needed. Traveling into Detroit once per month is required.
