A few months ago Carl published a new book:
A Conflict of Principles: The Battle over Affirmative Action at the University of Michigan [University Press of Kansas, 2014]
Carl would relish the opportunity to discuss with students and faculty and the public at large the issues addressed in this book, and to talk about its history. The battle over affirmative action here at Michigan was long (beginning in the early 1990s and ending only in 2014) and complicated, involving two Supreme Court cases, and a state-wide referendum. In Carl's view the position of the University was mistaken throughout, unwise from the viewpoint of minorities, and morally wrong. The book, in part a memoir, is mainly a philosophical defense of his critique.
