Roughly twice a year, the Psychology department sponsors a mock grant review panel to allow faculty to get detailed feedback on a grant proposal they're working on and/or to gain insight into the standard review process at funding agencies. Interested faculty submit a proposal to be reviewed, and also read and write reviews of other submitted proposals. We also typically recruit a few people with real panel experience to serve as additional reviewers (without necessarily submitting a proposal). After all the reviews are done, participants meet as a group to discuss each proposal in much the way real review panels are run. These panels can provide real insight into how the review process works. And of course participants also get detailed feedback on their own proposal draft, which can be very helpful.
