Physicist Henriette D. Elvang has recently received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Professor Elvang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, and a member of the Theoretical High Energy Group.

Professor Elvang received her B.S. from the University of Copenhagen and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on aspects of gravity, quantum field theory, supersymmetry, and particle physics. Specifically, her interests reside at the interface between particle physics, general relativity, and string theory. Before joining Michigan Physics in September 2009, Professor Elvang was a postdoctoral member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2008-09) and a Pappalardo Postdoctoral Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2005-08). 

The CAREER Award includes a 5-year research grant designated to the study of Supersymmetry. Principal Investigator Professor Elvang plans to use supersymmetry and other techniques to address open problems in three main directions of research: (1) exploring quantum gravity with black holes and the gauge-gravity correspondence; (2) investigating scattering amplitudes in gauge theory and gravity; and (3) studying models of supersymmetry breaking and their phenomenological consequences. The work is relevant because it addresses fundamental questions in physics and because understanding supersymmetry breaking could be central for the discovery of new elementary particles in collider experiments.
