Henriette Elvang joins the Physics Department as an Assistant Professor in the field of theoretical physics. Her research focus consists of gravity, quantum field theory, supersymmetry, and particle physics. Professor Elvang’s research interests reside at the interface between particle physics, general relativity and string theory. By using and combining the experiences and tools obtained from each of these fields, the goal is to be able to address challenging problems such as understanding the nature of quantum gravity, and how to connect string theory to particle phenomenology and experiment.

Among current research directions is the study of scattering amplitudes in gauge theory and supergravity. Professor Elvang works on developing efficient calculational methods and applying them to gain insight into the properties of supersymmetric field theories. Other research areas include studies of black holes in D-dimensional theories of supergravity:  what types of black hole solutions exist? How do we develop techniques for finding them? What are their physical properties? What do they teach us?

Professor Henriette Elvang received her M.S. from the University of Copenhagen in 2001, and her Ph.D. from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2005. Before joining Michigan in September 2009, Elvang was a postdoctoral member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2008-09) and a Pappalardo Postdoctoral Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2005-08).
