Meindert van Dijk obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from Leiden University in The Netherlands in 2007. He studied nonlinear optics of single gold nanoparticles. After completing his Ph.D., Meindert started at Deloitte in Amsterdam as an actuary in November 2007. Initially he worked as a pension actuary advising corporations on pension-related issues and then transferred to being an insurance actuary advising insurance companies on financial accounting and risk-management related issues. Since February 2012, Meindert has been working at Deloitte in Chicago as an insurance actuary. His presentation will begin with an introduction to his Ph.D. work, moving on to describing his actuarial work and the benefits of a physics Ph.D. in this field.  He will present some example projects, offering guidance on making the transition to industry, as well as information on actuarial study programs.
