Professors Liz Anderson and Tad Schmaltz were recently named LSA Michigan Humanities Award winners. These awards are presented annually to tenured, full-time faculty members engaged in major scholarly and creative projects in relevant fields. Professor Anderson will be writing a book entitled Moral Epistemology from a Pragmatist Perspective: Case Studies in the History of Slave Emancipation. This is part of a larger project in the History of Egalitarianism from the Levellers to the Present.Professor Schmaltz will use his award to work on a book-length study of the different forms of Cartesianism that emerged in the early modern period after the death of Descartes. One lesson of the book is that there were profoundly different conceptions of philosophical method within later Cartesianism that were grounded in different views of what is essential to Descartes's system.
