OS seniors Laura Parkinson and Monica Shattuck received the 2013 MLK Central Campus Spirit Award on Saturday, Jan. 26. Both women are pursuing a minor in Community Action and Social Change and were recognized for their work in this area.

Laura trained elderly citizens in leading tenant councils at the Harriet Tubman Center and she co-founded the MESA/Trotter affiliate program to help bring together student organizations pursuing social justice issues.

Monica has worked with the Coalition for Tuition Equality and has also been responsible for rebuilding the anti-sweatshop movement at the UM, reconnecting students organizing for labor equality with the national group United Students against Sweatshops.

Congratulations to Laura and Monica for winning this important award!
