Graduate Student Instructor Positions
The Department of Near Eastern Studies hires graduate students to lead discussion or language recitation sections in the Fall and Winter terms. Priority for these positions first goes to our PhD students. After they are assigned, any remaining positions are posted to umjobs.org under the "Graduate Student Appointments" tab. Only matriculated University of Michigan graduate students are eligible to apply to Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions. Available positions are posted for a minimum of two weeks. Postings for Fall term begin in April and may continue through the summer as additional positions become available. Postings for Winter are generally up by mid-November. We encourage interested graduate students to continually check umjobs.org for postings.
Students should be aware that NES's GSI hiring process requires both an application submitted through the umjobs.org portal and a department application. A link to the online department application will be within the umjobs.org posting. The department application asks for pertinent information to the available position, a copy of the student's most recent unofficial transcript, and a CV. The application will also require the student to enter the name and email address of one recommender. The recommender will be contacted via email by the department to submit a short evaluation on the student; a recommendation letter is not required.
After the posting expires on umjobs.org, the department begins the evaluation process. Evaluation of applications is done by faculty within the department and includes the lead instructor of the course. Interviews may be performed, so students should regularly check their email for an invitation. NES attempts to make hiring decisions within two to three weeks of a posting's expiration. Students will be contacted by department administration regarding their success in the hiring process. Appointment to a course is not official until presented with this notification and corresponding hire paperwork from the department.
