Diversity Series Presentation: Highlights from the 2015 Conference of the National Society of Black Physicists: Re-visioning The Future of Scientific Leadership
Presented by Bryan Terrazas* with Alejo Stark* Nuria Calvet# and Emily Rauscher#
This past academic year, the Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics (MIRA) has hosted a new series, Conversations on the Status of Women and Minorities in Astrophysics. These discussions aim at fostering conversations amongst members of the larger Physics, Astronomy and Space Science community at UM and sparking new ways of imagining and achieving equity and inclusion in our departments.
We will continue the dialogue by presenting highlights of our recent trip to the 2015 Conference of the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP): Re-Visioning The Future of Scientific Leadership. In particular, we will present an overview of NSBP and similar organizations and our own recruitment efforts geared towards undergraduate students who attended the conference.
We will also present specific recommendations to the Astronomy Department and open the floor for discussion on what can be done to help address the issues faced by under represented minorities and women specifically at UM.
