Ever since fall semester the MCSP ASB group had been planning on volunteering at a site in West Virginia. We researched the issues, held dialogues, and hosted events. However, the week before our planned departure we were notified that the place we'd planned on staying was under feet of snow and ice. Thankfully, a volunteer site in Harlan County Kentucky was able to host us along with two other UM ASB groups. Throughout the week we learned about the unique issues affecting the area and met residents. The service that we completed including repainting and sprucing up a home interior, helping build a homeless shelter, and assisting with the demolition of a garage that collapsed due to the large amount of snow. It was exciting to see the values of MCSP brought to a new location, where even more service learning could be put into action during the week.
