Earlier in October, John Swales visited our alum Dushyanthi Mendis (PhD, Michigan Linguistics 2004), now the head of the Department of English at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka. Dushyanthi wrote her dissertation, titled "A corpus-based study of the use and identification of metaphor in academic speech" under John's guidance. During his visit, John also gave a presentation on his research. The title of his presentation was "From parethetical plonking to intertextual story-telling:The citation practices of University of Michigan upper-level students." The photo shows John and Dushyanthi during his visit.
