Professor Anne Curzan will present in SoConDi today. Professor Curzan is an associate professor in the Department of English Language Literature, and also holds courtesy appointments in the School of Education and in our own Department. The title and abstract of her talk are given below.

Defining Prescriptivism and What's at Stake

The descriptive-prescriptive binary is deployed widely in linguistics, and yet the phenomenon of prescriptivism remains strikingly under-defined. In this talk, I will tease apart four different strands of prescriptivism, showing how their different aims result in different stakes for speakers and writers. I will also reflect on the role of prescriptivism in language change in contemporary English.
