ABOUT IRT
Established in 1990, the IRT addresses the lack of diversity in the nation's teaching faculties by recruiting outstanding students of color and other scholars committed to diversity, counseling them through the graduate school application process, preparing them for the rigors of graduate school through the acclaimed IRT Summer Institute, and advocating for sufficient funding for advanced study. Since 1990, the IRT has built a national consortium of the best colleges and universities across the U.S. that are eager to enroll IRT students to diversify their graduate student bodies and to expand the pipeline of educators to teach, counsel, and administrate in American schools, colleges, and universities.

Qualified Applicants Must:

  • major in the humanities, social science, mathematics, or education
  • have earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • be juniors or seniors, or graduates (If you are an interested sophomore, contact Leislie;  It is never too early to learn about your grad school options)
  • want to pursue a teaching, counseling, or administrative career at the K-12 or university level.

Programs
The IRT sponsors two programs.  The Summer Workshop is a four week program held on the campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.  IRT interns engage a graduate-level curriculum of critical and cultural theory, prepare for the GRE examination, and work on their statements of purpose.  The workshop typically runs during the month of July.  Interns are provided with room, board, and a $1200.00 stipend.

The Associate program is geared toward undergraduates and recent graduates who otherwise are engaged in summer research and/or study abroad activities.  Participants in both programs are sponsored by the IRT as they apply to graduate schools in a consortium of 41 affiliated universities.  The consortium universities waive application fees for IRT applicants.

Benefits
Both IRT Interns and Associates receive:

  • Individualized support and extensive counseling as you choose your field of graduate study and apply to renowned consortium graduate programs across the country
  • Reduced Rate for GRE preparation course
  • WAIVER of Application fees
  • Hands-on assistance for fine-tuning Statements of Purpose
  • Approximately two months saved on completing applications
