The Korean Language Program will develop a computer-adaptive test (CAT) in Korean that will be administered through the Internet by the end of Aug. 2006. A CAT is a test in which the computer selects and presents test items to examinees according to the estimated level of the examinee's language ability. It is necessary for a CAT to have a large pool of test items (Item bank). Thus the KLP faculty member, as project participants, will create a large item bank. By computerizing the majority of the placement test, the proposed placement test will enhance the placement experience by addressing many problems associated with the current pencil-and paper exam as described later in this proposal.
