Although a good understanding of spatial relationships is fundamental to understanding much of the course material in Earth System Science, teaching methods have strongly relied on maps, profiles and other 2-D representations, with the occasional physical model. The spatial reasoning required to understand the 3-D structure from 2-D representations, is often a serious stumbling block for students at the introductory level. With technology now available for classroom instruction it is possible to demonstrate earth science processes in 3 dimensions. This proposal seeks funding to trial the effectiveness of 3-D animated movies in an introductory science course.
