The CHEM 260 Honors studio was originally developed to address the need for an appropriate textbook in the general CHEM 260 Chemical Principles course and is open to all students in CHEM 260. CHEM 260 serves as an intermediate between general chemistry and upper-level physical chemistry courses, and is required for all chemistry and biochemistry majors. No textbook exactly conforms to the unique academic level of the course, so the CHEM 260H was originally designed as an avenue to create a student-generated quantum chemistry textbook at the appropriate level. To encourage creative learning and increase usability, the textbook format was shifted from a written text to wiki-site entries, however the textbook has never been incorporated into the general course. Previous work has indicated that the final drafts of the student-generated explorations still contain conceptual errors, despite the intended application of these explorations as supplementary material for the general course students (i.e., serving as an accurate source of information for the general course). In response to these findings, further peer-review strategies were devised by the Studio Peer Leaders and the Graduate Student Facilitators; however these procedures did not eliminate all conceptual errors and misunderstandings. Preliminary findings indicate particular misunderstandings continued to arise for certain topics, for example, regarding the Hamiltonian operator. As a result, we propose specific changes to the assignments and overall aim of the CHEM 260 Honors Studio. Rather than focusing on providing introductory-level explanations for specific topics covered in the general course, CHEM 260H assignments will require students to address common misunderstandings (i.e., problem areas) that have been identified from previous student-generated explorations. This transition is intended to help students to begin thinking critically and scientifically about their own understanding of course material, while creating a wiki-based forum open to all students.
