The Institute for the Humanities will provide funding for up to four humanities graduate students to attend the DHSI from 5–9 June or 12–16 June 2017 at the University of Victoria, Canada. Participants may choose to attend one or two weeks of the institute. Each week will include a skills training workshop as well as a selection of colloquia, “unconferences,” panels, and institute lectures.

The list of this year’s courses, as well as other information about the program, can be found at dhsi.org. This year’s course offerings include topics such as fundamentals of coding and programming for humanists, critical pedagogy and digital praxis, geographical information systems in the digital humanities, digital storytelling, feminist engagements with technology, open access scholarship, and accessibility, among others.

Grants will cover the registration fee for a week and provide $300 in reimbursement towards travel. These grants ask for matching support from the applicant’s home department. We anticipate awarding four grants for summer 2017. Grant awards will be based on the plan of study, including the statement of interest and rationale for participation.

Eligibility

Students enrolled in doctoral programs in LSA humanities departments at the University of Michigan are invited to apply.

Criteria for funding include: relevance of the course offerings to the applicant’s dissertation or collaborative project, need for (further) training pursuant to research for that dissertation or related project, and the applicant’s status in their graduate program. Students working on collaborative and digital projects with faculty members are also encouraged to apply.
