Goldwater Scholarship

Created in 1986 to honor the late Senator from Arizona and to promote the careers of future U.S. scientists, the Goldwater Scholarship is considered the preeminent prize for undergraduates in STEM fields.

Students apply in either sophomore or junior year.  The scholarship provides $7500/year.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents applying for citizenship.  Winning applicants typically have a 3.8 or better GPA, extensive research experience, and plan to pursue a career in scientific research.  Students planning to pursue an MD and career in medical practice are not eligible, although MD-PhD applicants pursuing biomedical research careers may apply.  Please visit the Goldwater Scholars Foundation's website for application details and list of eligible major/careers.

The deadline to submit applications to the U-M selection committee is Monday, December 1st, 2014 by 12 noon.  Interested students should fill out the online application on the Goldwater Scholars Foundation's website.  Letters of recommendation from faculty should be submitted directly to Henry Dyson at honors.scholarships@umich.edu, not to the Goldwater Foundation.  (The committee will forward letters of recommendation only for the selected U-M nominees.)

Please contact Henry Dyson at honors.scholarships@umich.edu with any application-related questions.
