“Is There an App for That?”  Help for Huge Problems in a Tiny Device

Diabetes, obesity, mental illness, addiction, prison recidivism, and poverty: these are some of our most intractable problems.  What’s the best way to help people who face them?  Could strategies for addressing such huge problems be found inside a smartphone?  It sounds too simple to be possible, but one UM professor is working on developing “Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions” that might empower people to combat those enormous difficulties. Based on her earlier work in adaptive intervention strategies based on statistical analytics, Susan Murphy, the H. E. Robbins Professor of Statistics, is trying to make this dream come true.

Come to hear Prof. Murphy talk about her work and ask her what it’s like to get a phone call out of the blue offering $625,000 to spend any way you like.  Prof. Murphy, who also holds positions in the department of Psychiatry and ISR, won a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in the fall.  You won’t want to miss this!
