Emancipation Today: What Issues Does It Raise Today?

The Emancipation Proclamation, with the effort to make it a reality and then to confirm that reality in the Thirteenth Amendment, has much to say to today’s world. The politicians and activists who struggled to bring about the Proclamation understood the power of image and the value of public opinion, and used them in very modern ways, developing the media of the 19th century the way activists today use social media and internet memes.  Both presidential power and the influence of grassroots action combined make emancipation real, changing American politics forever. Professor Jones, who is also co-director of the Program in Race, Law, and History at the Law School, will address these and many other issues raised by the Emancipation Proclamation.  Register here.
