Current Students

Doctoral students in the department of history come from a wide variety of personal and intellectual backgrounds. Students come to our program with prior degrees from Ivy League universities and from small state schools. Many have lived and worked outside the academy for several years before coming to U-M.  About 80% of our doctoral students enter the program with an MA degree in history or another related discipline.

Students are encouraged to participate actively in all aspects of department life, from teaching, serving on departmental committees, and organizing conferences and workshops, to helping recruit new faculty, and working collectively with faculty to chart the future of the department.
