ELI 538: Pronunciation in Context

10-week course

This course is designed for graduate students whose English is generally accurate and comprehensible who wish to continue refining the accuracy and naturalness of their speech. The course focuses on the pronunciation features important for extended speaking, including phrasing, stress, rhythm and intonation. 

After a brief review the English vowel and consonant sound systems, the instructor diagnoses individual areas of particular need for each participant. Voice and articulation are practiced in a variety of tasks, which are taped for self and/or peer analysis, and for diagnostic feedback from the instructor. These task include:

  • Informal, personal talks
  • Storytelling narratives
  • Process instructions
  • Problem/solution presentations
  • Persuasive talks
