ELI 534: Discussion and Oral Argumentation

In this course, graduate students develop the interactive speaking skills they need to effectively participate in seminar-style discussions and other formal group speaking situations. Participants acquire specific language and skills for effective interactive communication, including:

  • Active listening
  • Asking questions to clarify or seek information
  • Interrupting and holding the floor
  • Stating and elaborating a viewpoint

Participants receive extensive practice using these communicative skills in a variety of activities, including student-led discussions that are videotaped for further reflection and analysis.
