ELI 531: Language and Communication

10-week course

This course enables graduate students to develop the oral fluency and communication skills they need to interact successfully in both formal and informal academic contexts. Participants learn language and discourse strategies necessary to:

  • Ask and respond to questions
  • Express and elicit opinions
  • Respond to opposing viewpoints
  • Maintain interactions in a way that is satisfying for both the speaker and the listener

Participants engage in extensive language practice via outside-of-class assigned interviews with native speakers, in-class discussions, as well as individual and panel presentations, and other impromptu speaking activities.
