EEB career development workshop: for those of us who use the R programming language, no matter what you're doing, it always seems that there should be an easier and faster way to complete the task at hand.
For those of us who use the R programming language, no matter what you're doing, it always seems that there should be an easier and faster way to complete the task at hand. This is why (based on the suggestions of many students), I am pleased to announce an Advanced-R workshop.
This workshop is focused on certain packages and/or functions in R that can streamline your work -- whether it's data analysis or plotting. Topics for this workshop include: the apply functions, GIS in R, regular expressions, the plyr package, and ggplot.
The structure for this workshop will be similar to the Grad Hacks workshop, where each presenter will have 3-5 minutes to introduce their topic, and then we will split into smaller groups for focused learning. I will try to get a few projectors, but it will definitely be best if you are able to bring a laptop. On to the description/sales pitches!
"Loops taking forever? - Learn the pros and cons of using apply functions versus loops"
"Ever wanted to integrate GIS into the R programming environment? You will learn how to read in, manipulate and plot points, polygons and rasters and free yourself from the shackles of arcMap!" (please install R packages sp, maptools, rgeos, and raster)
"Learn the basics of regular expression and practice using it in solving some common exercises."
"Break apart a big problem/dataset into manageable pieces, operate on each piece, and then combine the pieces back together. It is useful to apply a particular test/analysis to each spatial location or time point of your data." (please install pyr package)
"Learn to make complex plots easily, with ggplot!" (please install ggplot2 package)
